the end in sight

the end in sight

Well that month flew past in a blur! With the end of the shoot in sight, we’ve been putting in some long hours in the studio, determined to get this thing across the finish line. Not long now…

We’re gonna need a few more days than the countdown of doom on our white board suggests, but should be wrapped by the end of next week if all goes well! Josh only has one more day with us, then just there’s a few landscape shots left to pick up that I can shoot by myself.

It feels strange to be finally reaching the end of this part of the project. There were times, as we trudged up what seemed an endless mountain, when I just had to look at the shots one by one, as glancing up at our distant destination made it feel like an impossible task. But now I’ve really got into the routine of going into the studio every day, working on the latest shot with Josh, emailing art notes to Ellen, cutting out things for the next scene. Living every day with our odd characters and this strange island, part myth, part history. After striving so hard arrive at the top of the mountain, it feels a bit sad to finally have the end of the shoot within reach.

Anyhow, we’re not there yet – still some rather tricky shots to get before we pack it up. In the meantime, here’s a few snaps from the last few weeks in the studio, including a couple of new characters!

A couple of siblings have joined the story. On the left is Pete. He’s a little twerp. Next to him is Katie. She’s cool…

Our whiteboard has seen some heavy use over this project, on subjects ranging across natural history, physics, and philosophy. Animation bring up some odd questions.

It’s been good animating weather, as winter delivers a few more bleak days on it’s way out, easy to put in those long hours in the cozy studio. Much harder in summer, when adventure beckons out the window.

Getting pretty good at brewing up our own weather these days. It looks like rubbish on the rig, but viewed through the camera it is transformed by some arcane process into beautiful skies.

It’s been a lot of fun having new characters on set. As much as I love our saints, we’ve seen a lot of them lately, and they are Very Serious about everything.

Well, that’s it for now. Gotta go prep some art for our last week of shooting! Fingers crossed, our next update should be bringing the shoot to a close. It’s been a long journey, and there’s more yet to come, with post-production on the horizon.
